Mount Vernon Country Club is a private 18-hole golf course located in Alexandria, Virginia.
Real estate developer Harry Dreisen purchased a section of George Washington's estate and dedicated approximately 100 acres to building a golf course and clubhouse. Little earth was moved in the development of the golf course. The course layout kept many of the dips, slopes and bends from Washington's original land, many of which remain to this day.
Mount Vernon Country Club's nine-hole golf course opened June 10, 1961. Sam Snead, Club Pro Dick Mason, and local Virginia pros Bobby Bowers and Al Jamison play opening round (the scorecard and photos from this round can be found in the hallway to Sam's Place.
The Course was named The Woodlawn Country Club in 1963.
In 1969 the course expanded to 18 holes.
In 1972 the Northern Virginia Retired Men's Golf Association ("Happy Hustlers") is started by Woodlawn Country Club and International Country Club.
In 1993 a new clubhouse was completed and club is renamed Mount Vernon Country Club
The entire golf course is renovated in the mid-90s, including new tee boxes, bunkers and six new greens, updating the golf course for the 21st century.
In 1994 the clubhouse was renovated to include expanding the outside patio area and adding a new upstairs dining room, "Sam's Place."
The Mount Vernon Country Club golf course features narrow fairways and well-manicured greens. Water hazards (a creek and a pond) come into play on several holes. All the fairways are tree lined, so accurate tee shots are essential.
Par for the course is 70. From the back tees the course plays to 6,281 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,416 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 15, a par-5 that plays to 560 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 2, a par-3 that plays to 179 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 3, a 421 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Mount Vernon Country Club is # 16, a 183 yard par-3.
